New photography exhibition and book about the Robin Hood Gardens council estate

Docklands Outreach collaborated in a photography and research project to chronicle the lived experience and architecture of the famous Robin Hood Gardens estate in Poplar, Tower Hamlets.

Using photographic portraits of residents and interviews conducted in Bengali and English, the project’s online exhibition and book place residents’ experiences at the centre of the living architecture of Robin Hood Gardens.

The estate had suffered decades of disinvestment and neglect, this is what the residents resented, not the architecture or their council tenancies. Challenging the common misrepresentation and stigmatisation of this and other council estates, the research found that residents greatly enjoyed the social life, homes, streets in the sky, and landscape of Robin Hood Gardens.
